BUTT UGLY by Lynn Montgomery Illustrated by: Terrie Redding Release Date: 8/1/08 Publisher: ZuZu Petals Books Pages: 32 Rating: 4 Stars Reviewed by: Jennifer Wardrip, aka "The Genius"
When you're born the runt of a litter, not to mention a little on the greenish side, with a squished-up face and three straggly hairs sticking out of your rump, it's no surprise that you're given the name Butt Ugly.
It's also no surprise that the name makes you feel puny on the inside, too.
Surrounded by twelve other brothers and sisters with great names like Fang and Princess, you just know that when the time comes to get an owner, you won't be pick of the litter.
And that makes you feel even more puny.
So when you find yourself squashed into a basket, covered up with boxes and a scratchy blanket and dumped unceremoniously on a stranger's porch, you're pretty sure something bad is going to happen.
But what if the door is opened by a little boy wanting a puppy to love? Can Butt Ugly turn into a Fred, a dog who feels loved, wanted, and strong?
Lynn Montgomery writes a cute story with hidden meaning. No matter how your outsides might look, it's what's on the inside that matters - and all it takes to make you feel less puny is someone with unwavering love and devotion.
