First off, thanks so much for joining us for an up-close and personal interview for TeensReadToo.com! My name is Jen, and I'll be your server toda...oh, wait, wrong job! Anyway, thanks so much for taking time out of your writing schedule--which I'm sure is busy!--and answering a few questions for your readers and fans.
Let's get some of the typical interview questions out of the way first. When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I knew the day The Society showed up at my desk and lowered a weapon at me. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Can you tell us a little bit about your road to publishing?
Rocky. Bumps. Then more rockiness. But I had to KEEP GOING. I AM NOT A QUITTER! Why, what else could I do, give up? Why not just keep trying even after the mountains of rejection slips and name calling? I say again, what else could I do even if The Society didn't have that blaster thing trained on me every step of the way? (Well actually, if I hadn't been roped into this I guess I really would have liked to sit in coffee shops and look mysterious and then go mountain climbing. I don't know, hang out with friends would have been fun too.)
Tell us a little bit about either your latest or upcoming release. If you could only tell your readers one thing about the story that had to convince us to buy the book, what would it be?
It's boring. No, not the book--the dreadful town all the people in the book are trapped in! Just like your town, no doubt. But the amazingness of life is right around the corner and they almost didn't know where to look. Anyway, everything in the book, REALLY HAPPENED according to my sources. (THE EYE POCKET: THE FANTASTIC SOCIETY OF PECULIAR ADVENTURERS)
What, or who, has been the greatest inspiration for your stories?
The people who lived the story! I can't believe what they stumbled upon. Also The Society "inspired" me to write what I did. I know nobody thinks The Society is real--but I assure you it is and a lot of the people in it are real creeps!
Let's hear about your family, who I'm sure are thrilled to have a published author among them!
The people in my family don't talk to me. Even when I come to the breakfast table which is the worst time. They just want to read the paper and drink coffee or cocoa and be left alone even when I try to talk about my dreams, politics and what GREAT day it is!
Now for some fun facts. What's your greatest comfort food?
I actually ate frozen mammoth once. That's my favorite but it's hard to get a hold of. I was comforted.
What are the first three things you do when you wake up in the morning?
Open my eyelids. Talk politics. Tell my family at the breakfast what a GREAT day it is!
If I came to your house and looked in your closet/attic/basement, what's the one thing that would surprise me the most?
I have this really neat box full of stuff that I keep in my closet with this big hairy monster who lives there. The box has real old looking engravings.
Everyone asks the question about "if you could be a tree, which tree would you be?" so I want to know: If you could be a color, which color would it be, and why?
That's Top Secret. Sorry, I can't say.
Who is your favorite cartoon character? Which cartoon character is most like you?
I like Sylvester. Bugs. And Cartman. I'm probably most like Popeye.
If you could beam yourself to anywhere in the world ("Beam me up, Scotty!"), during any time in history, where and when would it be--and why?
To the far future to meet the very last person and find out what happened to us all!
So what's your favorite type of music to listen to? Favorite musical artists? Do you listen to music while you're writing?
I like all music. Once in awhile I write listening to something over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Do you have any favorite T.V. shows? Movies you watch over and over again? What was the last movie you saw at the theater?
Gilligan's Island! Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings!
You have the chance to give one piece of advice to your teen readers. What would it be?
RUN! and don't get caught up in method--write just write and then keep refining. Don't get caught up in the words, get caught up in the story,
One last question. What stories can we look forward to from you in the future?
I have many more stories but The Society is very shady. I'm waiting for them to contact me again. If they don't contact me soon I plan on slipping out of town.
Again, thanks so much for joining us at TeensReadToo.com!
