Reminiscent of Aesop’s fables, KALULU THE HARE OUTWITTED
is a retelling of an African folktale.

Told in beautifully subdued colors, this is a lovely story of
animals coming together to solve a problem.

All of the rivers and ponds have dried up.  The animals of the
Kalimatunda are thirsty.  So they gather together to decide how
to solve their problem.  They all agree to work together to dig a
pond for water.  Unfortunately, Kalulu, the hare (rabbit) is lazy
and decides he would rather lie around and enjoy the sun
instead of work.

The rest of the animals have labored hard on their pond and
decide that they will not let Kalulu take advantage of the water
they have struggled to find.  So they decide to build a wall
protecting the pond, and each night, a different animal will guard
the opening.

Unfortunately, Kalulu is smarter than most of the guardians.
Each night, he brings just the right distraction.  It’s not until the
most unlikely animal, the tortoise, offers his services, does
Kalulu meet his match.

KALULU THE HARE OUTWITTED is a wonderful story for the
older child learning to read on their own, but the content may
require some explanations to the younger reader.  However, that
being said, the pictures alone will keep young and old intrigued
until the ending, when Kalulu finally learns his lesson.
